Puck's a scavenger in the husk of what used to be Los Angeles. There's work there. Not much of it honest. She's been there long enough to know what trouble looks like and how to avoid it. And she knows better than to trust any evergreen who comes making stupid promises. Living comes first. She's pragmatic, but that has its own sort of problems. Especially when money outweighs the reasons to say no.
It's been said that the best protagonists are the ones who just want to go home, because those are the ones we most understand. Puck fits this description in a disturbing way, because underneath her wasteland severity is a notion we recognize: the desire to not live, die, or suffer for anyone else's misguided zeal. Husks works so well because of this connection, and because it treats the ugliness of its world with absolute sincerity. The better traits humans possess are there because we pulled ourselves up out of the dust, and if we fall back in, we'll likely be brutal creatures, lacking in empathy or remorse. There are moments throughout where a little light shines through, however, and that's where you'll find the heart in the story. Little flowers popping up through the dirt, and the promise of something better. But it is the balancing of this, the grittiness and the desperation that surrounds each bright spot, that gives the story its grounding and makes it feel real, and that seems to be the biggest accomplishment. If you appreciate that kind of realism in science fiction stories, you'll find a lot to like here.
