Product Description

Warm, wise, and magical—the latest novel by the bestselling author of THE LITTLE PARIS BOOKSHOP and THE LITTLE FRENCH BISTRO is an astonishing exploration of the thresholds between life and death Henri Skinner is a hardened ex-war reporter on the run from his past. On his way to see his son, Sam, for the first time in years, Henri steps into the road without looking and collides with oncoming traffic. He is rushed to a nearby hospital where he floats, comatose, between dreams, reliving the fairytales of his childhood and the secrets that made him run away in the first place.   After the accident, Sam—a thirteen-year old synesthete with an IQ of 144 and an appetite for science fiction—waits by his father’s bedside every day. There he meets Eddie Tomlin, a woman forced to confront her love for Henri after all these years, and twelve-year old Madelyn Zeidler, a coma patient like Henri and the sole survivor of a traffic accident that killed her family. As these four very different individuals fight—for hope, for patience, for life—they are bound together inextricably, facing the ravages of loss and first love side by side.   A revelatory, urgently human story that examines what we consider serious and painful alongside light and whimsy, THE BOOK OF DREAMS is a tender meditation on memory, liminality, and empathy, asking with grace and gravitas what we will truly find meaningful in our lives once we are gone.

There is more between life and death than we can tell from here. The book Of Dreams is one of the more insightful books I have read about the land between living and dying. The author, Nina George, explores all the realms of this never never land between a dying man and those he is leaving behind.Henri Skinner has just saved a young girl from drowning by jumping off a London bridge to save her. As he tries to gain his balance at the top, he falls into the street and is hit by car. Henri has a massive head injury and is brought to the neuro intensive care ward after surgery. It is here that we meet the people most dear to Henri, and those who are trying to save him, the nurses and the neurosurgeons.Henri was on his way to see his son, Sam. The two had never met for a variety of reasons. Sam, a 13 year old with an IQ Of 144, is a synesthete, someone whose brain tends to translate physical perceptions into colors. Numbers are colors, 4 is yellow for example. His synesthesia also is sensitive to emotions and thoughts of others. Sam learns of the accident and visits his father everyday, and meets Eddie Tomlin, Henri’s former lover, who never stopped loving him. They form a tight bond, all the while talking and reading to Henri, urging him to live. We also meet Madelyn Zeidler, an 11-year-old girl who is in a coma after an accident that killed her family. Sam becomes attached to her, and, now, there are two lives to hang onto.Henri is also part of the dialogue, he tells us his life, while telling his story, while in a coma. The in-between living and dying is explored in a lovely, meaningful way. This is one of the more exhilarating storylines. We all wonder what occurs during a coma or just before we die. This book gives us a peak at one perspective, shown through 3 character’s experiences. You won’t forget this book soon. I urge everyone to read this masterful novel.Highly Recommended. prisrob 04-13-19
