Will any ONE book teach you how to draw, or how to be an artist? Not likely. Does this book provide knowledge and insight helpful for someone aspiring to improve their sketching and drawing skills? Absolutely. This is a much less technical treatment than more contemporary "how to" books and suggests a more personal, adaptive approach that emphasizes individuality with a focus on capturing the essence of your subject while adhering to the core principles of perspective, toning (light and shading), and form. I would recommend adding this to the mix after starting with more specific beginner books that you may have found helpful (I started with the classic, "How to Draw What You See," by Rudy De Reyna which provided a good foundation in technique and an introduction to different media (pencil, charcoal, washes, acrylics, and such). If you started with Watson and put it down disappointed, I'd say it's worth a revisit after you've gained some understanding and context from other sources.
