Jimmy Raney was one of the earliest guitarists to absorb and begin to work with the musical innovations of the bebop revolution. He made this language his own which is no small feat on the guitar which poses difficulty in phrasing the language of Charlie Parker which of course is a saxophone based idiom. He not only was one of the very first to do this but he also made it his own ,developing a personal style and composing many great pieces . He is admired by many instrumentalists as well a jazz guitarists. This book ,compiled and expanded on by his son Jon ,an excellent pianist in his own right , contains insight into Raney's approach to improvising and is far from a collection of "licks" as it was from a previously unpublished work by Jimmy where he exposes the reader/player to the underlying structure of his playing in detail. To this Jon has added examples transcribed from Jimmy's many classic recordings that further demonstrate these concepts as well as some more exercises to help the reader absorb and hopefully personalize these concepts . Five stars all day for this one !
